Writing these blog posts in the gym has been a good move as I’m getting quite few more ideas. As I watch fellow gym goers doing their thing, I’m observing more, so you’ll probably be getting quite a few more fitness related posts from me in the future. Today’s post is about exercise intensity.
Today was a short workout, intervals on the rower. As I’m pulling with all my might until I’m panting like a dog who’s just fetched a bone I can see out of the corner of my eye the slow, repetitive moment of the cross trainers. Being used by either been those mislead about exercise, who are maybe warming up or cooling down (that’s okay) or are too afraid to take themselves out of their comfort zone. Chances are though they just have no motivation.
I’ve often used the quote ‘all positive change comes from being outside your comfort zone‘ and it’s so true. But the reality is, comfort zone is just that… ‘comfort(able)’.

In which zone do you normally exercise?
But let’s for a moment try and get you to step up your game if you fall into the category I just mentioned. If not, good on you!
Whenever working with a client 1-1, where other trainers would stand behind or next to them (say on a rower), I would spend the majority of the time in front of them, looking directly into their eyes and towards their face – I wanted to see something:
Passion, determination, effort, high-energy, an ignition of something!!! I mean, I want them to grunt like a tennis player who’s smashing it around the court like nobody’s business. You get what I mean here. I’m talking both on cardio and weights based sessions, whatever exercise we’re doing… unless we’re cooling down or warming up.
It can take some time to take someone who finds it hard to get into full-throttle to actually crank it into that gear and I have to admit, sometimes you’re working with someone who doesn’t want it badly enough. Sometimes I would have to tell the client that I can’t work with them if they’re not able to put in the effort. I don’t want to take their money if I can’t get them results. Effort = results. Not panzying around.
Imagine the look on the face of an Olympic sprinter as they are just about to cross finish the line – they’ve trained for months for this one moment. You can see it in their face, their eyes are bulging. They’re pulling all sorts of crazy expressions. How crazy does your face get? How many noises are you making? Oh come on, just a little one?
When you’re working out, put in your all or don’t bother. Feel your heart throb like never before and you’ll notice the results. Going through the motions won’t give you the body you want.
Make today the day you start shocking your body like a high-voltage charge that’s just taken over you. Not only may you be close to crying, falling over, puking or maybe all three during your session, but the feeling you will get afterwards once you’ve hosed yourself down will be better than your best intimate encounter… well okay, maybe that’s pushing it
Are you working out as hard as you should be? Let me know in the comments below what really motivates you to work harder…
